UNREST AT KAUMONI BOYS HIGH SCHOOL IN KAITI CONSTITUENCY, MAKUENI COUNTY.

Chaos erupted at Kaumoni Boys High School in Kaiti, Makueni County after students allegedly torched several key administration blocks in protest over what they described as poor school administration and failure by the management to address their grievances.

The angry students reportedly set ablaze the principal’s office, deputy principal’s office, dean’s office, laboratory and teachers’ staffroom, leaving behind extensive destruction estimated to be worth millions of shillings. Witnesses said the learners also smashed windows and vandalised other school property during the unrest.

According to the Kenya Red Cross Society Makueni branch, the incident was reported shortly after midnight, prompting the county emergency response team to rush to the scene with an ambulance and fire engine. However, rescue efforts were hampered after students allegedly barricaded the school entrance and damaged the fire engine, making it difficult for firefighters to contain the blaze in time.

The driver of the Makueni County Fire Department fire engine sustained injuries during the attack and is currently receiving treatment in hospital.

Police officers deployed to restore calm were also reportedly forced to retreat after being overwhelmed by the unruly

Following the incident, students were sent home as authorities begin investigations into the destruction and the circumstances that led to the unrest.

The incident marks the first reported case of a school being set on fire by students in the region this year. Dr. Johnstone Ndivo, Makueni County Principal’s Union Chair, has since urged school heads to remain vigilant and strengthen communication channels with learners to prevent similar incidents.

Neighbouring Taita-Taveta County has also witnessed several cases of school unrest this year, raising concern over increasing cases of student indiscipline in learning institutions.
