History : SYOKIMUA

 Prophetess Syokimau

INTRODUCTION

In the Kamba language (Kikamba), the prefix “Syo-” is often used to mean “of”, “belonging to”, or “associated with” something.

It usually shows possession, origin, or relationship — especially in names or places.

Examples:

1. Syokimau → “The one from Kimau” or “belonging to Kimau.”

“Syo” = of/from

“Kimau” = a person’s name

→ So, “Syokimau” means “woman of Kimau” or “Kimau’s wife.”

2. Syokau → “The one from Kau.”

3. Syovatha → “Of Vatha” (belonging to or from Vatha).

Who was Syokimua?

Syokimau was a legendary Kamba prophetess from precolonial Kenya — one of the most famous seers in Kamba history.

Here’s what is known about her:

Tribe: Kamba (Akamba community of Eastern Kenya)

Era: Lived in the 19th century (before the arrival of British colonial rule)

Role: A seer and prophetess who foretold future events affecting her people

Her most famous prophecy:

Syokimau is remembered for predicting the coming of the white people (colonialists) and the construction of the railway (“iron snake”).

She is said to have described seeing:

“A long iron snake spitting fire and smoke, moving from the Indian Ocean to the interior.”

and people of a different color who would rule over her people.

This vision came true decades later when the Uganda Railway was built from Mombasa to Kisumu, and the British colonialists arrived in Kenya.

Legacy:

The town Syokimau, located near Nairobi in Machakos County, is named after her in honor of her prophecy.

She is regarded as a symbol of wisdom and spiritual foresight among the Kamba and across Kenya.
